Spring 2018 Internships: 

Judicial Watch is currently seeking interns for our 2018 Spring Internship Program to serve in the following capacities:

Legal Intern: Legal interns have the opportunity to work closely with our Legal Department on various federal lawsuits brought under the Freedom of Information Act, the Privacy Act, the Administrative Procedure Act, and the National Voter Registration Act as well as state lawsuits on behalf of taxpayers.  Over the course of 8-10 weeks, interns will assist Judicial Watch’s eight attorneys and two paralegals with legal research, brief writing, drafting FOIA requests and administrative appeals, document review and analysis, and a host of other key litigation responsibilities, as well as various other duties as assigned. Library Archivist Intern: Judicial Watch’s Library Archivist Intern will set up an archiving system to label, tag and organize the database of electronic documents stored on JW’s website. The archiving system will encompass a wide variety of stored information including; documents received from the United States Government via Freedom of Information Act requests, as well as JW videos, press releases and legal documents. Investigations Intern: Investigations interns at Judicial Watch are introduced to the structure of government agencies subject to the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).  Investigations interns learn about the nine FOIA exemptions, and how to draft FOIA requests accordingly.  They also research the open records laws for state and local governments and use their findings to supplement requests at the federal level.  Once the interns in the JW Investigations Department have been trained on proper FOIA protocol, they are encouraged to explore key issues of personal interest and/or open investigations under Judicial Watch’s guidance. Development and Fundraising Intern: Judicial Watch’s Development Department is seeking interns for its busy and growing fundraising development program to assist Development staff in the many day-to-day activities fundamental to raising over $21 million for one of the leading conservative non-profit organizations in America. Development interns will gain experience and understanding in all aspects of non-profit fundraising, from direct mail, internet fundraising, and foundation grants, to major and planned giving programs. Interns will assist with a variety of tasks including donor correspondence, telephone calls to donors, writing and sending acknowledgement letters, major donor research and foundation grant writing, as well as various other duties as assigned.  Interns will also gain a thorough knowledge about the importance of donor databases by assisting with data-entry, data clean up, donor coding and more. Interns must be politically conservative, detail oriented and willing to learn. Full Time Positions: 


Department: Development

Reports To: Manager, Development Operations

Status: Exempt – Full Time

As a member of Judicial Watch’s Development Department, the Fundraising Coordinator (Grants) is responsible for soliciting grants from family foundations and large-scale philanthropic foundations.  The Fundraising Coordinator (Grants) will obtain grant funding from new foundations and work to increase funding from existing foundation donors. Working closely with the Manager of Development Operations and the Director of Development, the Fundraising Coordinator (Grants) researches foundations and their trustees, and develops and executes written proposals to current, lapsed, and prospective foundations.  The Coordinator reports directly to the Manager of Development Operations to generate grant proposals on a regular, consistent basis.

Scope of Responsibilities

The Fundraising Coordinator (Grants) will maintain a working matrix of foundations, current, lapsed and prospective, containing pertinent information such as grant submission deadlines and the nature of each grant (general or project-oriented).  This matrix will be a resource for all fundraising staff to reference which foundations (and individuals) are being managed by the Coordinator.  It will be updated weekly as to the status of each grant proposal.  The Fundraising Coordinator (Grants) will also manage projects as they arise and are relevant to foundation solicitation, which may include special events and intermittent travel.

List of Duties

Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundations
  • Prepare and send letters of inquiry to prospective funders
  • Comply with all grant reporting and receipting as required by foundation donors.
  • Coordinate with the Manager of Development Operations to provide regular updates for required collateral to be sent to foundation and corporate officers (newsletter, major reports, etc.)
  • Maintain current records and CRM actions in donor database and in paper files, including grant tracking and reporting, receipting, submission calendar, and revenue reports.
  • Maintain calendar of deadlines and engagement for proposals, grants, and cultivation opportunities.
  • Maintain all calendars related to submission and reporting deadlines
  • Cultivate and foster effective relationships with current funders and new foundation prospects, in particular, by maintaining ongoing contact and effective working relationships with foundation program officers.
  • Collaborate with staff to maximize potential of current and prospective funders.
  • Prepare briefing memos and other informational materials that aid the organization’s management team’s donor engagement.
  • Conduct and update foundation and major donor prospect research to support organizational goals.
  • Support the Major Gift and Foundation staff with proactive, regular donor research and prospect identification. Establish and execute processes needed to ensure all routine and necessary contact, cultivation and follow-up are accomplished.
  • Other tasks, as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals.
  • A clear understanding of Judicial Watch’s mission and ability to convey strategy.
  • Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors.
  • Strong editing skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to meet deadlines independently of outside reminders.
  • Knowledge of fundraising information sources.
  • Knowledge of basic fundraising techniques and strategies.
  • Familiarity with research techniques for fundraising prospect research.



  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience with grant writing.
  • Previous experience with non-profit fundraising.
  • Experience working in deadline-driven environments.
  • Able to work well independently while handling multiple assignments and meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Able to monitor, meet, and report on income goals.
  • Must have an affinity for the organization’s mission

Department: Development

Reports To: Director of Development

Status: Exempt – Full Time

Summary: The Regional Development Manager at Judicial Watch reports directly to the Director of Development and is an integral part of the organization’s development staff. This position works to ensure a collaborative approach to engagement and gift strategies in the area of individual major gifts as well as planned giving. In addition, this position helps plan and implement special fundraising campaigns as needed.

Requires high visibility with Judicial Watch donors and prospects. This position operates with minimal direct supervision. In addition, this position requires frequent regional travel as well as evening and weekend work.

Full Authority Responsibilities:

  1.      Raise significant revenue (a minimum of 3X the organizational expense of this position).
  2. Identify, qualify and manage a personal “portfolio” of 100-150 donors, each having the capacity to make a minimum gift of $10,000/year with the focus especially on donors with the ability to generate six to seven figure gifts.
  3. Personally solicit gifts from these individuals, and implement stewardship strategies to further the likelihood of increased future giving.
  4. Develop written individualized goals for each donor along with written solicitation strategies based on the donor’s history of giving and the knowledge of the donor’s potential for increased giving. Coordinate these strategies with the Development Department and participate in monthly conference calls.
  5. Conduct an average of 12 face-to-face visits each month with prospects and donors.
  6. Represent and effectively communicate Judicial Watch’s values, achievements and current priorities to the public.
  7. Respond to referrals of major gift prospects from the Development Department in a timely and well-documented manner.
  8. Record all “moves management” activities in Judicial Watch’s CRM in a timely and thorough manner.
  9. Organize and coordinate special events, when and where appropriate, to introduce prospective donors to Judicial Watch and to increase fundraising potential from current donors.
  10. Prepare and submit in a timely manner, all reports including: Call Reports, Monthly Top Ten Reports, Expense Reports and other reports as requested.
  11. Work closely with the Development Department to ensure that assigned prospects and donors have well-documented and comprehensive data records to include donor’s capacity and interest ratings and other relevant personal information.
  12. In concert with the Director of Development, develop and prepare an annual budget and fundraising goals which will provide funding for the efficient accomplishment of assigned tasks.
  13. Perform all duties within the Judicial Watch Development Department guidelines and the AFP Code of Ethics.
  14. Other duties as assigned.
